December is the month of giving, and I’m joining Passports with Purpose latest campaign to help raise money for education in Africa through buildOn.org.
What is Passports with Purpose?
PwP is a virtual, non-profit organization made up hundreds of travel bloggers who come together to help raise funds for projects in much needed communities around the world. As travellers, we’ve met so many different people and cultures along our journey who have opened themselves up to us – through their hospitality, culture, or way of life. Travel has given me so much to be thankful for so PwP is my way of giving back. I’ve been wanting to get involved with PwP for a couple of years now so I am thrilled it is finally here on the blog! This year we are raising money for buildOn.org.
What is buildOn?
buildOn has helped build more than 500 schools in rural villages in some of the poorest countries in the world. They have built schools in Malawi, Senegal, Nicaragua, Haiti, and Nepal. In Mali, buildOn volunteers have constructed nearly 200 schools. About 24,000 more children in Mali can now go to school on a regular basis.
Why Mali, Africa?
Mali is the 5th poorest country in the world according to the UN’s Human Development Index and has one of the globe’s lowest literacy rates. Only 31.1% of males and only 20.3% of females can read or write. buildOn’s mission is to break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy. In the long term, it will improve economic growth, sustainability, and provide social empowerment.

How can you help?
I’ve teamed up with iTravel2000 to bring you this very cool prize! iTravel2000 is one of Canada’s largest travel companies. They are passionate about travel as much as you and I are, but if there is ONE thing they are more passionate about than travel it is to give back to much-needed communities around the world.

Where will my donation go?
Through PwP, buildOn hopes to construct three schools for young children and fund three adult literacy programs in the Sikasso region of southern Mali. The adult literacy programs will help teach men and women how to read, write and do basic math. They will also educate adults about nutrition, family planning, and income generating activities. Your donation will go directly to the community and the people we are trying to help.

I believe it is better to give than to receive. While education for many of us is readily available, in some places around the world it isn’t. Even in just a few weeks we’ll be writing our wish list to Santa, unwrapping exciting surprises Christmas morning, and digging into little stocking stuffers from our mantels. Our abundance unfortunately is not shared by everyone. Please consider donating just $10 to give back to children and adults in need this year.
