Kleinmarkthalle is Frankfurt’s best indoor food market. This tiny little hall (its name literally means small market) is just off of Berliner Strasse and jam packed with over 60 vendors (the competition makes it super cheap to have a full meal here) selling the fluffiest bread, most scrumptious desserts, freshest cheese, fish, local fruits, spreads, and pretzels bigger than your average wiener.
Food markets are an authentic way to experience local life, taste the cuisine, and feel like a local. Just wandering from stall to stall was a food oasis for me.
The markt dates back to 1890. It was completely destroyed in 1944 when much of Frankfurt was bombed during WWII, then rebuilt by the people ten years later. Kleinmarkthalle has become a local staple in Frankfurt.
Getting here: Metro Dom/Römer (U-Bahn 4 or 5). Walk about a block north to Hasengasse.
Closed: Sundays

I prefer to eat from local mom n pop shops and markets than chains or spots in the guide book

Cool pictures. We got to see it at a stiff walk straight through. I would have liked to have slowed down and take some time (and some clearer pictures of my own). Just as a note, I expect Germans would see ‘fluffy’ bread as awful. They take their bread very seriously and it fluffy with air would seem wasteful. 🙂
Where you just passing through Frankfurt or are you in Germany for long?

Andrew I was just passing through but I hope to have more time the next trip there. If you’re in Germany too, would be great to meet up!
